    If it isn’t your own picture, you’ll need to make sure it’s either under a free license or write a fair use rationale for it. Proper licensing is important; post a query at one of the site’s messageboards if you’re unsure.

    Images can be uploaded directly at this link:

    If it’s your own material or if it’s public domain, consider uploading to Wikipedia’s sister site. This way all the different langage editions of Wikipedia can use the image:

    Once the image is loaded, basic markup looks like this:
    [[Image:imagename.jpg|thumb|right|your caption]]

    Create an account and edit for a while. Your account must be several days old and you must have made some edits before you can upload an image. Click on “Upload file” and follow directions. Give the image a name that reflects its content (Not Image:983320.jpg). If you took the picture yourself it’s easy, as you can simply release the image under an open source license such as the Gnu Free Documentation License, but there are other alternatives. After you have uploaded your image go to the page you want to put it on and put this:

    [[Image:Name of the image|thumb|right, (or left)|300px|description of the image]] (The “|” is a vertical bar, also called a “pipe”) You can make the image smaller by making it 200px, or bigger by making it 400px. The description of the image can contain internal links, such as [[sunset]] at [[Malibu]].
