What can I use to build my own social network website?

I am wondering how to go about doing this. Is there a website kit I can find somewhere? I’ve been browsing some sites, came across Dolphin – but that appears to be a dating site by the search fields I saw, and Mashable was interesting but didn’t seem to have any articles that could help me.
Can anyone suggest any software or something similar that I can use to set up such a network?

You can go to sourceforge.net and see if they have a script that you can use and you can find scripts to purchase, some free at hotscripts.com that will do what you’re wanting. You’ll have to read instructions carefull and do the uploading andediting of the program onto your website host yourself.
You can search for some open source programs.
Also, you could learn PHP, and write a website.
Then use a free host like 4000webs (no, I’m NOT trying to advertise here) or 110mb.
Or you could ask someone on a forum or IRC to write one for you.

I’m not sure if there is any in the Web, but the better thing to do is to create it using PHP
A blog like word press is a good starting point. You can add video clips and audio clips and what’s more family can opt in to posting to it. WP is a free download. Getting hosting is also very inexpensive. You probably already have the ability from you IsP.
Yahoo groups is another way to do it, just create a family group and off you go.
There are also many php scripts available for member sites it just depends on how involved you want to get.

Wow, surprised no one mentioned this. I’d recommend ning.com, i’m starting a social network with them and It’s totally free. There’s also me.com, but I chose to use ning. Oh, and great idea making a social network for you family, mind if I steel it? lol Seriously, now I want to make a Network for my family
