I restored my computer cuz of a virus. Is there anyway to retrieve old files like music and word documents?

if you restored it to factory settings, everything is GONE forever!

    Chances are, everything was lost.

It also depends on how you “restored” the computer. Did you use a disc that came with the computer that then formatted everything? If so, you have to use an “undelete” program like Recuva to try and restore the files. It’s a difficult process that is rarely highly successful.

If you just reinstalled Windows, then there might be a better chance, but it’s still slim if the files aren’t there. The key is to use an undelete program.

It should have prompted you for a backup…in any case, stop saving to your hard drive immediately and install this program on an external media (say a USB drive). It can search your harddrive for file metatags (that say “I’m a movie file!” or “I’m a music file!” and show you the list of files that were “deleted” but not overwritten. In that method, you can recover some of your lost data.

You should reverse the restore back, then save those essential files first, then run a top antivirus ware such as Xoftspy and Spyware Doctor and MastrScan. Forget AVG and Norton’s, which are lousy at detecting and cleaning the most dangerous viruses. From my testing, the best FREEWARE antivirus program is AntiVir, which could be a bit annoying at times cause its so good at protecting your computer. If afterwards there are still viruses, continue to do a complete restore, then re-clean the computer with antivirus software.
