How to turn off Norton (to make it possible to access Google Maps and other sites)?
Pophy in silly hats asked:
My friend very recently got a new laptop that runs Windows Vista. It came with some kind of Norton Protection Center, and now when she tries to use Google Maps, she can’t. Even though she never blocked it, it is acting as if she has and she cannot find how to unblock it or, even more preferably, just turn the darn Norton program off altogether.
Step-by-step instructions would be very helpful, as I’m afraid I’m not very good with technology.
She does not want to remove it altogether, rather just turn it off temporarily to use Google Maps, or just find a way to make it let her use it while it is running. It is not a parental control filter either, so any other ideas would be helpful.

Norton is like a gay male fashion designer. Good at it’s job, but absolutely gay.
This is true. Norton is perhaps sometimes excessive in the ‘protection’ it gives to users. The idea of Norton (a product by Symantec), if you didn’t know, is to protect the PC from hackers and malicious software which can infect your PC whilst using the internet. The only way Google Maps could have been blocked is by a parental control filter, which your friend could have turned on by mistake. To turn off the filter, go into the Norton program, which will be under Programs on your Start Menu, and when it has loaded click the parental control tab. Now you can change the settings on what is and what is not allowed to be viewed from the internet on the laptop.

Tell her to completely remove it through Programs and Features and download SUPERAnti-Spyware, it’s free and it isn’t annoying.

Norton is absolute rubbish. Instead visit the Symantec site and find the Norton program your friend is using and she can remove it there. Norton cannot be removed through programs in Windows. Just get AVG free or Kaspersky.
