As long as you want!
You can keep them or get rid of them whenever you want. It is a one time $5 to start a Google AdWords account and after that you are paying for every click and you can pause, cancel, delete your account anytime you want to.
You can also create daily budgets so you don’t spend too much money no matter what.

There is no “contract” with AdWords. You can bid on the keywords for whatever length of time you wish.
